TIPS ON HIRING A MOLD REMEDIATION CONTRACTOR

008 magazineAre you tired of that musty odor in your home or business? Or that discoloration on your walls or ceiling? If so, keep in mind that the cause could be mold growth. While mold is naturally occurring in the environment and is almost always found in all indoor areas, it can pose health concerns to individuals with certain risk factors and in large enough quantities.

Now, before picking up the phone and calling just any mold remediation contractor to help you, take note of the following tips to make sure you select a company that will handle your needs in a professional manner.

  1. Hire an industrial hygienist (IH)/mold assessor to perform indoor air quality and/or

surface sampling prior to selecting a mold remediation contractor.

  1. Make sure the IH will not also be performing the mold remediation. The IH and

mold remediation contractor should not have any common ownership.

  1. Get a copy of the IH’s written report before contacting a mold remediation

contractor.

  1. Get more than one written estimate. Bid the job!
  1. Ask the contractor for names and numbers of recent customers and call them to find out about their experience.
  1. moldResearch to see if any complaints have been filed against the mold remediation

contractor.

  1. Make sure the contractor is currently licensed in the state.
  1. Ask them to provide you with a current insurance certificate that indicates mold/pollution coverage.
  1. Be wary of anyone telling you that they will make your home or business “mold

free.” This is virtually impossible, as mold spores flow into and out of dwelling

spaces during normal living conditions.

  1. Have the IH conduct post-remediation verification testing to ensure that the

problem has been resolved.

By following these steps you will have a clearer understanding of what the remediation process will entail and also have the assurance that your contractor will perform the work by industry standards.
